Frequently Asked Questions

Questions & Answers

Questions are normal, and we’d rather you ask them. Here are some of the most common questions we’ve heard after decades in this industry.

Preparation & Process

How should I prepare for my appointment?

A little planning goes a long way toward a smooth appointment.

If it’s your first time getting tattooed, here’s our advice: Show up in comfortable, loose fitting clothing that allows easy access to wherever you’re getting tattooed. Be rested, fed, and hydrated. Keep in mind not to wear anything you wouldn’t want ink or blood-stained.

Even if this isn’t your first rodeo, the advice still applies.

Does it Hurt?

Yep. They all hurt, and they’re all manageable. Different parts of the body hurt differently, and we don’t endorse painless tattoo solutions.

If you want the least painful experience, choose areas with more muscle and fewer nerve endings (outer arm, thigh, calf). Ribs, chest, feet, spine, and inner arms tend to sting more.

And also, pain is temporary, tattoos are cool forever, and you’re tough, you’re gonna make it.

Is there a best time of year to get a tattoo?

Winter is easier for healing, but any season works if you’re willing to care for your tattoo properly. Sunshine, sweat, water, and high-movement areas of skin all impact healing differently, but with the proper aftercare, any season can be the right time to get a tattoo.

Talk to your artist about healing if you have more specific questions.

Can I use numbing cream?

We don’t recommend it. If you’re certain you need it and plan to use it, talk to your artist first so they can guide you on what works and what causes problems.

How long will it take?

Timing depends on size, detail, and placement. A general estimate for standard sizes:

Small pieces may take 20–45 minutes. Medium “Palm-sized” pieces often take 1–3 hours. Larger or more detailed work can take multiple sessions.

Each artist works at their own pace, and they’ll give you a clearer estimate once they see your idea.

Booking & Pricing

How much will my tattoo cost?

We price based on size, detail, and placement.

Smaller pieces start at the shop minimum (100$), and larger or more complex designs may be quoted hourly or at a flat rate.

Your artist will give you a clear quote once you’ve come together on a design.

Do I need to leave a deposit?

Your $100 deposit goes toward your final total and secures your appointment time.

Deposits are non‑refundable.

Do you take walk-ins?

Yep, we’re open everyday for walk-ins. Stop in and you’ll find our artists ready for your next project.

How do I book an appointment?

Reach out directly to your artist through their preferred contact method, or stop by the shop to talk through your idea in person.

What if I need to reschedule?

Reach out to your artist as soon as possible. Deposits typically transfer to the new date if you give at least 24 hours notice.

Do you accept tips?

Tips are always appreciated. Cash is most common.

Can I get tattooed two days in a row?

Hell yeah you can! If you’re in town for a couple days and want to knock out a big project we can work with you on a plan.

You can also get two (or five) tattoos back-to-back, or at the same time. We’re a fun shop like that.

Aftercare & Healing

How do I take care of my new tattoo?

Keep it clean, avoid picking, and follow the aftercare method your artist recommends.

Tattoo healing styles vary from using a second skin, applying a light lotion, or a hands‑off approach.

Talk to your artists if you’re not settled on your own healing methods.

Can I go swimming or to the gym?

You should treat healing a tattoo like a wound.

Avoid pools, hot tubs and oceans entirely until completely healed.

For baths avoid submerging the tattoo and for showers you can allow some warm water to spray directly on the tattoo.

As for the gym we’d recommend either working out from home, or covering it until it’s healed.

Friction and moisture can slow healing or cause irritation and infection.

Do you offer
touch-ups?

We guarantee every tattoo we make. If we put it on you, we’ve got your back. Some areas of the body are more likely to need a touch up than others. Ask your artist what to expect for your specific tattoo.

What should I do if my tattoo is itching or peeling?

This is a normal part of healing for every tattoo. The name of the game is to endure it without scratching or picking at your tattoo while it heals as this can lead to infections and longer healing time.

In the most dire cases, a tiny pea-sized amount of antibiotic ointment can be used to treat small problem areas. Remaining hydrated and using lotion can also help to alleviate some of this feeling.

Health & Safety

Are your needles and equipment safe?

Yes. We follow strict sanitation standards and use single‑use needles for every client.

Can I get tattooed if I’m sick?

Our advice is to check in with your artist as soon as possible if you’re feeling sick or under the weather before or on the day of your tattoo.

Can I get tattooed while pregnant or breastfeeding?

For safety reasons, we do not tattoo anyone who is pregnant. You should not get tattooed while pregnant. Check with your doctor if you’re breastfeeding.

What are the age requirements?

18 or older, no exceptions. Valid Photo ID required.

Can I bring a friend?

You’re welcome to bring one friend for support, as long as they’re respectful of the space and the artist’s workflow.

No one under the age of 18 can hang inside Ritual Tattoo, no exceptions.

Design &

Customization

Can I see the drawing before my appointment?

Designs are usually shown the day of your appointment. This protects the artwork and allows your artist to make adjustments with you in real time.

Can you cover up an old tattoo?

Cover‑ups are absolutely possible with a bit of imagination and compromise. They require a consultation to see if the old tattoo is light enough or if the new design is feasible.
